“For years, we have stayed in these huts and always aspired for pucca homes, but luck has always eluded us. Even our hands have given up. Any big or small storm alerts us; what if the rouge winds take our roofs along with their fasteners with it. We have spent nights holding on to the fasteners. But now that we have our pucca homes, we would have freedom from such disturbances.”

Daliben from Gondal’s Gundala village shared the above.

Daliben earns her livelihood from collecting plastic junk, she and many like her have always dreamt of a pucca house.

VSSM has started building homes for 60 families in Gundala with a significant contribution from First Abu Dhabi Bank. Apart from them, US-based Shri Kiranbhai Shah, Vrushbbhai Modi, Jay Sonawala, Jignesh Vaidya,Vyoma Parikh, Kusum Dalal, Shantilal Nanchandra Kothari Charitable Trust, Dr Alim Adatiya, H. D. Fire Products, Amoliben Shah, Prashant Bhagat, Dr Ashwin Patel, Nisha Butani, Subhashbhai Shah and many have supported the construction of these upcoming settlement.

VSSM is grateful for the support it has received from our well-wishing donors. 

Once the construction of 60 houses completes, we shall begin constructing the other 46 houses.

We wish for each family to have its abode. No one should ever feel that they neither have land to farm nor a house to stay.

Beginning from this project, VSSM has introduced a Sample House the families can come and view to get an idea of the type of house they will soon move in. The 60 families loved what they saw. The shared image shows the construction underway. 

We hope for the accomplishment of the respected Mr Prime Minister’s dream of housing for all. This pledge will allow these families of Gundala to move into pucca homes.

We are thankful to the respected Chief Minister of Gujarat and the district administration of Rajkot for their empathy and support towards these families. On this occasion, we remember  Shri Aal Saheb, the ex-additional collector who has worked tirelessly to make the dream of a home a reality for these families.

“વર્ષો ઝૂંપડામાં રહ્યા. પાક્કા ઘરની ઘણી હોંશ. પણ અમારા નસીબમાં આ બધુ ક્યાં? આ ઝૂંપડાં બાંધી બાંધી ને તો અમારા હાથમાં ફફોલા પડી ગ્યા. વાવાઝોડું આવે કે અમને ફડક પડે. અમારા ઝૂંપડાં ઊડી જાશે તો એ બીકે વાવાઝોડામાં અમે છાપરાં બારા ખીલા હારે બાંધેલી દોરી તુટી ન જાય, ખીલો ઊખડી ન જાય એ હાટુ ખીલા પકડીને બેસી રેતા.  પણ હવે બધી વાતે નિરાંત થવાની.. હવે અમે પાક્કા ઘરવાળા થાશું”

રાજકોટના ગોંડલના ગુંદાળામાં જેમનું ઘર બંધાઈ રહ્યું છે તેવા દલીબહેને આ કહ્યું. દલીબહેન પ્લાસ્ટીક વીણવાનું કામ કરે. એમના ને એમના જેવા ઘણા માટે તો ઘર એ સ્વપ્ન સમાન. 

ગુંદાળામાં અમે 60 પરિવારોના ઘરો બાંધવાનું શરૃ કર્યું છે. એમાં સૌથી મોટો સહયોગ ફસ્ટ આબુ ધાબી બેંકે કર્યો. એ સિવાય કીરણભાઈ શાહ(અમેરીકા), વૃષભભાઈ મોદી, જય સોનાવાલા, જીજ્ઞેશ વૈદ્ય, વ્યોમા પરીખ, કુસુમ દલાલ, શાંતીલાલ નાનચંદ્ર કોઠારી ચેરીટેબલ ટ્રસ્,ટ, ડો. અલીમ અદાતિયા, એચ.ડી.ફાયર પ્રોટેક્ટ, અમોલીબેન શાહ, પ્રશાંત ભગત, ડો. અશ્વિન પટેલ  નિશા બુતાણી, સુભાષભાઈ શાહ વગેરે જેવા કેટલાય પ્રિયજનોએ પણ મદદ કરી. જેના લીધે આ કોલોની બંધાઈ રહી છે. આપ સૌનો ખુબ આભાર..

બસ દરેક વ્યક્તિને પોતાનો માળો મળે અને કોઈ વ્યક્તિ એવું ન કહે કે, અમારી પાસે સીમમાં શેઢો નહીં ને ગામમાં ઘર નહીં..

આપણે ઘર ખરીદવા જઈએ ત્યારે સેમ્પલ હાઉસ પહેલાં જોઈએ તો એવું ગરીબ માણસો માટેના આવાસમાં કેમ નહીં? માટે અમે સેમ્પલ હાઉસ બાંધ્યું. જેને 60 પરિવારો જોઈ ગયા ને એમને એમનું ઘર ખુબ ગમ્યું. 

બંધાઈ રહેલા ઘર તમે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકશો...

આદરણીય વડાપ્રધાન શ્રીનું સ્વપ્ન દરેક વ્યક્તિને ઘર આપવાનું સાકાર થાય તેમ ઈચ્છીએ.. એ સ્વપ્નના લીધે જ આ ઘર વગરના પરિવારો ઘરવાળા થશે. 

રાજકોટ જિલ્લા વહીવટીતંત્ર અને મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીનો આભાર કે એમણે આ પરિવારો માટે લાગણી રાખી પ્લોટ આપ્યા ને ઘર બાંધવા સહાય પણ... 

અને હા ગોંડલના પ્રાંત કલેક્ટર શ્રી આલ સાહેબને પણ યાદ કરવા ઘટે. હાલ એ ત્યાં નથી પણ એમની મહેનતથી આ બધુ પાર પડ્યું.

‘This flood fulfilled my desire.

I am saying this wholeheartedly. Otherwise It would have been mountain of debt on me. 7000 I took for my mother’s post cremation rituals (last rites ceremony). From that when it turned to Rs. 70,000, I didn’t even realise. To get free from debt I decided to put myself on mortgage.  But there was grief because I didn’t want to leave my village.

A night before floods, I was sitting in front of Mataji (goddess) and I had tears in my eyes that time. I said by praying that “Ma, I don’t want to leave my village.” I had lost hopes. I had to leave next morning and everything was packed. And Ben, on the next day, flood came. Roof and our all household things were washed away.

We had to live in a school, and mentally I had lost myself. But that time you and Naranbhai came. You took care of us, and my situation changed to better. Dear Ma (Dear goddess) listened to my request.

You made us free from debt and see now pakka house we could build too.

This ‘Govo’ is now turned into ‘Govind’, Ben!

I want to do Mataji’s chanting and you will also have to come Ben. After you come then only I am going to start living in that house."

‘Govind, don’t waste your money by doing this ritual’ when I said this to Govind, he agreed to that. Don’t see this as criticism but as faith Govind and many more people like him have.  And I strongly believe that human being's hard work and faith ultimately help in survival.
In Totana, apart from Govind Bajaniya, there are many more houses being built by VSSM with the help of our well-wishers.  We thank you all our dear ones who helped us in this task…

‘આ પુર મન ફળ્યું.

લો હાવ હાચુ કઉ સુ. માથે દેવાનો ડુંગર થઈ જ્યોત ક નઈ. હાત હજાર મારી માના કારજ હાતર વ્યાજવા લીધાતા તે હાતના હીતેર હજાર(70,000) ચાણ થઈ જ્યા કોય ખબર ના પડી. દેવું ઉતારવા મારી જાતન થરાદ પાહેણના ગોમડાંમોં ગીરો મુચવાનું નક્કી કીધુ. પણ બહુ દુખ થતુ તુ માર ગોમ સોડવું નતુ.

પુર આયુન ઈની આગલી રાતના મારી મા(માતાજી) પાહેણ બેઠો ઓહુંડા પડી જ્યાતા બેન. મા માર ગોમ નઈ સોડવુ એવી પ્રાર્થના મે કીધી. મુ હારી જ્યો તો. હવારે નેકળવાનું હતું લબાચો તૈયાર હતો. અન બેન બીજા દાડ પુર આઈ જ્યું. સાપરુ ન બધોય સોમોન તણઈ જ્યો. 

નેહાણમાં રેવાનું થ્યું. મનથી હાવ ભોજી જ્યો તો. પણ એ વખતે જ તમે અન નારણભઈ આયા. અમારી હંભાળ લીધી. ન મારી દશા બદલઈ જઈ. મારી માએ મારી વિનતી હોભળી.

દેવું તમે ઉતાર્યું ન જુઓ પાકા ઘરવાળોય થ્યો.

આ ગોવો હવ ગોવિંદ થઈ જ્યો બેન.. 

માતાની રમેણ કરવી હ અન તમાર આબ્બાનું હ્. તમે આવસો પસી જ મુ ઘરમો રેવા જવાનો.’

આ વાત રમેણ કરીને ખોટો ખર્ચ ના કર ગોવિંદ એવું જ્યારે ગોવિંદને કહ્યું ત્યારે એણે કરી. આ વાતને ટીકાના સ્વરૃપમાં ના જોતા ગોવિંદ અને એના જેવા કેટલાય લોકોની શ્રધ્ધા સાથે જોશો. અને હું દૃઢ પણે માનું છુ કે માણસની મહેનત અને સાથે તેની શ્રધ્ધા જ તેને જીવાડે છે.

ટોટાણામાં ગોવિંદ #બજાણિયા સિવાય પણ ઘણા પરિવારોના ઘરો સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા શુભેચ્છકોની મદદથી બની રહ્યા છે. મદદ કરનાર સૌ પ્રિયજનોનો આભાર..

VSSM helped Rekhaben Devipujak to fulfill her dream to have her own house

“Av ame lokoni jem re’vanu shikhi jya. Pe’la to na’va dho’vani y hamaj na’ti padti. Sapramo oy-thi-to padyo reta’ta. Hu n ma’ro ghar valo fugga n budhdhina baal vech’ta. Hakhal-Dakhal badhu hede jatu, pan Maheshbhai malya k nai? Tyarti amar ji’van j badlaai jyu.”

“We have now learnt to live like other people. Previously we had no sense of even taking bath or anything! We used to move our hut here to there and stayed on. I and my husband used to sell balloons and Cotton-Candy. It was a kind of irregular life-style until we met Maheshbhai but after meeting him, our life changed.”

During 2009, when we met Rekhabahen Devipujak, she was not having Voter card, Ration Card or any other document that may be helpful to recognize as the citizen of India. Maheshbhai made her understand that life cannot be lead only on the balloons and candy selling. You can start a new business like selling vegetables to fulfill your financial needs. Rekhaben showed enthusiasm and she thought to take chances with the new business. ‘Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch’ helped her by donating a vegetable hand cart costing Rs. 5500. She was worried that if the business may not be well but then slowly and gradually it was streamlined. Her courage to work was boosted with it and she also got in to making hearth out of asbestos sheets. She also did seasonal farming on a partnership basis and earned 37,000 profit in it. Rekhaben’s hard work brought her to enough financial stability to dream for her own house.

She asked for Rs. 10,000 loan and VSSM helped her by providing interest free loan to buy her dream home. She bought house under government scheme. Nearly after the 8 years of struggle, Rekhaben has now her own house and financial stability. 

This help made her sensitive towards her handicapped brother in law’s family which earlier she could not even think because of her own struggle to earn enough to lead her own life well. She now feels so confident that she is able to earn well and may take additional responsibility to help other family members. This is how the sense of helping others has extended in her life. 

VSSM has this strength to help the enthusiastic Rekhaben who struggle to lead life just because of the lack of easy financial help. Our donor’s help becomes the backbone of someone’s life in various people’s life. 

VSSM helps Rameshbhai Nat attain health and happiness….

“My health isn’t cooperating, please take care of my children if anything happens to me!!”  requested teary eyed Rameshbhai Nat when he was at the hostel to visit his children. His wife and daughter Urmila were in tears as well. Rameshbhai Nat resides in Deesa, he is severely diabetic and spending on treatment was beyond his financial capability.

“Don’t worry, you are going to be just fine.” I assured him. We helped him with the treatment and his health began to show signs of improvement.

Rameshbhai and his family stayed in a shack on government wasteland. The contentment of owning a house was a distant dream for Rameshbhai. The joy and peace one experiences by owning a house is beyond the comprehension for the privileged like us who have resources to attain this dream. The nomadic families do not even have means to rent a decent room with water and power and are left with no choice but build shanties on government wasteland.

VSSM’s continuous lobbying with the government helped 143 families like Rameshbhai’s obtain residential plots in Juna Deesa. The could also access housing loan from one of the welfare schemes by government. Since Rs. 45,000 isn’t enough to build a house, VSSM had mobilized support from its well-wishers and provided the families with additional assistance of Rs. 40,000 each. Rameshbhai also took a loan of Rs. 20,000 from VSSM and put in the money he had saved to build this beautiful house that you see in the picture. There are some small details that need to be finished but Rameshbhai is completing it gradually with the money he can manage to save. “Ben, I am going to do all that you have asked me to, you mentioned of a fence, I have been saving money for that. You will be delighted to see the result!!”

Recently, I was in Deesa to monitor the progress on the ongoing construction of houses when Rameshbhai proudly showed me his brand new home and even requested for a picture together.

રમેશભાઈ નટ ડીસામાં રહે. ડાયાબીટીસની સખત બિમારી. તબીયત સતત બગડી રહી હતી. તેમના બાળકો અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણે. રમેશભાઈ તેમની પત્ની સાથે તેમની દીકરી ઊર્મીલાને મળવા હોસ્ટેલ પર આવ્યા. ‘તબીયત સાથ નથી આપી રહી. હું મરી જઉ તો મારા બાળકોને સાચવજો’ એવું બોલીને એ રડી પડ્યા.

દીકરી ઊર્મીલા અને તેમના પત્ની પણ રડે. મે હૈયાધારણા આપી. સારુ થશે એમ કહીને તેમની ડાયાબીટીસની ટ્રીટમેન્ટ શરૃ કરાવી અને તબીયત સુધરી. 

ખેલ કરનાર રમેશભાઈ પાસે પોતાનું ઘર નહોતું. પોતાનું ઘર હોવાનું સુખ જેની પાસે પોતાનું ઘર નથી એવા વ્યક્તિને મળીએ ત્યારે સમજાય. જો કે આપણી પાસે તો પૈસા છે એટલે જ્યાં લાઈટ પાણીની સુવિધા છે તેવું ઘર ભાડેથી લઈ લઈએ તેમ છતાં પોતાનું એ પોતાનું એવું આપણે વાત વાતમાં બોલીએ. પણ જેની પાસે ભાડેથી ઘરમાં રહેવાના પૈસા નથી. તેવા વ્યક્તિ પાસે તો સરકારી ખરાબામાં છાપરાં નાખવા સિવાયનો કોઈ વિકલ્પ બચતો નથી. અમારા વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારો આવી જ હાલતમાં જીવે છે.

રમેશભાઈ નટની પણ આવી સ્થિતિ. છેવટે સરકારમાં અમારી રજૂઆતોથી રમેશભાઈને અને તેમના જેવા 143 પરિવારોને જુનાડીસામાં પ્લોટ મળ્યા. સરકારે 45,000 મકાન બાંધવા આપ્યા. Vssm સાથે સંકળાયેલા સૌ દાતાઓએ પણ પ્રત્યેક ઘર દીઠ 40,000ની મદદ કરી. રમેશભાઈએ Vssmમાંથી 20,000ની લોન લીધી અને થોડી બચત ઉમેરી ફોટોમાં દેખાય છે તેવું સરસ ઘર બનાવ્યું. હજુ થોડું કામ બાકી છે. ‘પણ બેન તમે જેમ કહેશો એવું ઘર બનાવવું છે. તમે ઘર ફરતે વંડી ચણવાનું કીધું છે ને તે એના પૈસા ભેગા કરુ છુ. તમે રાજી થઈ જાવ એવું ઘર બનાવવું છે.’ હું જૂના ડીસા વસાહતનું કામ જોવા ગઈ ત્યારે તેમણે હસતા મોઢે આ કહ્યું અને પોતાનું ઘર બતાવ્યું. સાથે ફોટો પણ પડાવ્યો.

Keshuben's before living condition...

Keshuben Dideda belongs to Vadia and has been married to Amrabhai Saraniya for last

15 years. Amrabhai is an alcoholic and shared no financial burden hence the sole it became Keshuben’s sole responsibility to run the household. Keshuben took up petty menial jobs to earn living. The family survived in  a shanty that would fall apart every monsoon. After each monsoon Keshuben was required to spend her hard earned money on refurbishing the roof of her shanty. One day Keshuben narrated her plight to VSSM’s Shardaben who requested VSSM  for  extending support of Rs. 25,000 to Keshuben.

Keshuben suggested that instead of giving the money to her they be paid directly to the vendor from whom the building material was to be sourced as she feared that her alcoholic husband would  take away that money and waste it on his drinking. Hence VSSM followed her instructions and made payments to the vendor suppling the construction material and Keshuben bared the cost of labour and masons. Keshuben who until now had always lived in a shanty moved to stay in a proper pucca house of her own.

One day Amrabhai asked her, “VSSM has made this house for you, what do you want from me??

Keshuben was very quick to reply, “ Give up alcohol, that is all I want from you.” True to his word Amrabhai has given up his habit of drinking. The couple now work as labourers and share the responsibility of running the household. 

“ It is 15 years after marriage that we are experiencing  the bliss of being married!!” shared Keshuben to VSSM’s team member.

સરાણિયા કેશુબેનનું VSSMના માધ્યમથી નવું ઘર બન્યું.

બનાસકાંઠાના વાડિયાના દીકરી કેશુબેનના દીદેડા ગામમાં રહેતા અમરાભાઈ સરાણિયા સાથે પંદર વર્ષ પહેલા લગ્ન થયા. બંને પતિ પત્ની છાપરામાં રહેતા હતા. પતિ દારુ પીવે, કમાય નહિ, ઘર ચલાવવાની જવાબદારી કેશુબેનના માથે. છાણવાસિંદા કરી પોતાનું ગુજરાન ચલાવે. ચોમાસું આવે એટલે છાપરું તૂટી જાય અને નવું છાપરું બનાવામાં જે થોડી ઘણી બચત કરી હોય એ ખર્ચાઈ જાય. કેશુબેને પોતાના બધા જ દુખની વાત VSSMના કાર્યકર્તા શારદાબેનને કરી એટલે VSSMની ટીમએ પચીસ હજાર રૂપિયાની સહાય આપવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. કેશુબેને કહ્યું કે “ઘરે પૈસા આપશો તો ઘરવાળો લઇ લેશે બહેન” એટલે પૈસા સીધા દુકાનદારને આપ્યા અને પતરાં, ઇંટો, રેતી, સિમેન્ટ, પાઈપો એ બધો સામાન સીધો કેશુબેનને ત્યાં પહોંચ્યો. ઘર બાંધકામમાં પોતે અને કડિયાને મહેનત કરીને પોતે પૈસા આપ્યા આમ મજુરી કરી ઘર ઉભું કર્યું. કેશુબેન પોતે હમેશા છાપરામાં જ રહ્યા હતા.

હવે, પોતાની કહી શકાય એવી છત માથે છે. એમના પતિ અમરાભાઈ એ કેશુબેનને કહ્યું કે “બહેનએ તો ઘર બનાવી આપ્યું તો હવે હું તને શું આપું?” કેશુબેનએ કહ્યું કે “દારુ છોડી દો બસ..” અને અમરાભાઈ એ એજ ઘડીએ દારુ છોડ્યો. હવે બેય પતિ પત્ની સાથે મજુરી કરે છે અને કહે છે કે “પંદર વર્ષ ના લગ્ન જીવન પછી પહેલી વાર સાથે ખુશ છીએ”. 

VSSMના માધ્યમથી અને સૌ સ્વજનોની મદદથી કેશુબહેન જેવા ઘણા પરિવારોને મદદરૂપ થઇ શક્યા જે માટે અમે સૌના આભારી છીએ.

The long wait for basic amenities in the upcoming settlements for nomadic families…..

 Since the beginning of  its conception to formation, VSSM has adopted a heuristic approach to address wide ranged issues the nomadic and de-notified communities face. The issues VSSM endeavours to resolve, range from education, rights, health, housing, livelihood to social reforms with in the community and most of the issues have been noticed and addressed for the first time. The resolutions  that evolve from our grassroots learnings are framed into strategies and shared with the communities and authorities. Most of the solutions that  evolved have been advocated to the  policy makers as potential remedies to the choric issues faced by the nomadic communities. 

One of the most imminent needs these wandering communities want to be fulfilled is that of settling down. Their nomadic lifestyles aren’t productive anymore to provide a better and secure future to their coming generations they need to start leading sedentary lifestyles. VSSM is actively engaged in ensuring the families get small plots of residential land and aid to build a decent one room house. We have also facilitated the construction of 5 settlements. 

Ongoing construction at Juna Deesa settlement 

Currently, a settlement for 133 families is being constructed in JunaDeesa in Banaskantha. The funds to carry the construction come from government, VSSM and the families. VSSM mobilises the amount from its well-wishers while the families contribute in form of labour or shell out money as and when they are able to earn something extra. The  low house design that has been developed by VSSM  costs more than 1 lakh for which the  government aid is Rs. 45,000 in urban areas and Rs. 70,000 in rural areas. The aid amount for rural areas was raised after VSSM’s numerous recommendations to government. However, we fail to understand why such demarcation between the rural and urban regions as  the same sanctions had to be considered for semi-urban and urban areas. All our subsequent  appeals to the concerned departments and government  haven’t brought any favourable results yet!!! Similarly we have also been requesting some official  actions on certain infrastructural issues in the settlements and these requests too haven’t been received well by the government and officials. 

We have requested simultaneous installation of water and power connections for the houses in the settlements.  Currently what happens is  these houses get  power and water connections 2-4 years after completion of construction and their moving into their pucca homes. Same is with the road that connects the settlement to the rest of the village/town. Until all these vital amenities  do not reach the settlements the purpose of a proper housing isn’t served. VSSM has been appealing to the authorities to bring some fundamental changes in the way they aid and approach the construction of such settlements. 

The nomadic families  of Juna Deesa are required to buy water at the cost of Rs. 500 to 600 to continue with the construction.  We have been writing to the authorities for the last 2 years on these matters but with no positive results. Recently the settlement has been installed with solar street lights while the wait for domestic power connection continues.  We hope the concerned authorities try to resolved these pending issues at the earliest….

બનાસકાંઠાના જુના ડીસામાં 133 વિચરતી જાતિ પરિવારોની વસાહત બની રહી છે. સરકાર દ્વારા આ પરિવારોને વિનામુલ્યે પ્લોટ અને પ્લોટ પર ઘર બાંધવા રૃા. 45,000ની સહાય આપવામાં આવી. સરકારે તેમની ચિંતા કરી તે માટે આ પરિવારો સરકારના હંમેશાં આભારી રહેશે. પણ કેટલીક બાબતો આ પરિવારોના ઘરો બંધાઈ રહ્યા છે તે વેળા ધ્યાને આવી અમે સરકારનું પણ ધ્યાન દોર્યું પણ એ દિશામાં સરકાર દ્વારા નોંધપાત્ર પગલાં લેવામાં આવ્યા નથી. ક્યાંક બરાબર થતું ના હોય, કામની ગતિ ધીમી હોય તો આપણે શબ્દ વાપરીએ છીએ સાવ સરકારી છે. બસ આવું જ કાંઈક અમે આ વસાહતમાં જોઈ રહ્યા છીએ.

પ્લોટ ફાળવાયા પછી ઘર બાંધવાનું કામ શરૃ થાય એટલે પાણી અને વિજળીની સૌથી પહેલાં જરૃરત ઊભી થાય પણ સરકારી રીતે જોઈએ તો લાઈટ, પાણી, રોડ વગેરે તો આખી વસાહત ઊભી થઈ ગયાના બે ચાર વર્ષે આવે. વિચિત્ર લાગે તેવી આ વાત. એક તો આ પરિવારોની આર્થિક સ્થિતિ નબળી રૃા.45,000માં ઘર બાંધવાનું શક્ય નથી. આથી થોડા દિવસ કામ કરે અને પૈસા બચાવે અને ઘર બાઁધકામમાં ઉમેરે. સંસ્થાગત રીતે અમે પ્રત્યેક પરિવારને સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્વજનોની મદદથી રુા.40,500ની મદદ કરી છતાં આજની મોંધવારીમાં ઘર બાંધવું સહેલું તો નથી જ ને. આવામાં લાઈટ અને પાણીની સુવિધા સરકાર દ્વારા પહેલાંથી થાય તો આ પરિવારોને એટલો વધારાનો બોજો ના પડે. બાંધકામમાં જરૃરી પાણી ટેન્કર દ્વારા આ પરિવારો લાવે લાઈટ આજુ બાજુના લોકોને કરગરીને તેમના ત્યાંથી ખેંચીને લીધી જેના તે વ્યક્તિ કહે તે પૈસા ચુકવવાના. આ બધું ક્યાંથી પોષાય. આવામાં ઝટ ઘર બાંધવા પાછા અધિકારી ઉતાવળ કરે ક્યાંથી થાય આ બધું?

અમે છેલ્લા બે વર્ષથી જુના ડીસાની આ વસાહતમાં લાઈટ અને પાણીની સુવિધા માટે લખી રહ્યા હતા. પણ કશો ઉકેલ આવતો નહોતો. આવામાં અચાનક સોલાટ પાવરથી ચાલતી સ્ટ્રીટ લાઈટના 7 થાંભલા વસાહતમાં નાખવામાં આવ્યા અને સ્ટ્રીટ લાઈટ શરૃ થઈ. સારુ થયું સ્ટ્રીટ લાઈટ તો આવી. હવે લોકોના ઘરોમાં લાઈટ ક્યારે આવે છે તે જોવાનું છે. જો કે પાણીનું તો હજુ સુધી કશું થયું નથી. આજે પણ  500 થી 600 રુપિયા ખર્ચીને લોકો ટેન્કર લાવી રહ્યા છે અને બાંધકામ તેનાથી કરી રહ્યા છે. પાણીની આ જરૃરિયાત પણ સરકાર ઝડપથી સમજે અને આનો પણ ઉકેલ લાવે તેમ ઈચ્છીએ.

One more village opposing to the settlement of the nomadic communities in their village….

“Be warned of unpleasant  consequences if you plan to settle these families in our village. They aren't from this village and we do not want them to stay here forever….”

“But these families have been here for years, where will they go if no-one will accept them?”

“That is not our concern, we will not allow to their permanent settlement in our village!!”

This  conversation was between the team of VSSM and the village leaders of Rantila village in Banaskantha’s Diyodar block. The village elders and leaders are opposing allotment of plots to 14 families belonging to the nomadic Bharthari, Gavariya and Raval communities. The village has ample space and yet the rich and the influential villagers are finding it difficult to spare some space for the poor…There are times we feel all is well and suddenly we have instances like the particular one and we begin to question such poor mindsets of the rich and powerful….

Right from  the Chief Minister, District Collector, District Development Officer etc., VSSM has made  numerous appeals to all the concerned authorities on this issue.  The authorities aren’t prepared to consider giving them land on paper so as to meet their targets of allotting plots to families living under BPL..After countless requests and appeals the Circle Officer accompanied by his team of officials arrived at Ratila village  to measure the plots. Their arrival tensed up the situation so much that was threat to life….. The Circle Officer, Shri.Gadhvi Saheb is a compassionate officer. 

“These are extremely poor families. One should voluntarily come forward to give some place to them and help them build homes, instead of choosing to oppose such initiatives,” explained Shri. Gadhvi Saheb. But no one was ready to listen to his appeal. Nonetheless, Shri Gadhvi continued to finish the job he had come for. He measured the plots but the Sarpanch refused to sign the Land Allotment Order letter. There were political pressures as-well!!!

On 5th June,  these  Bharthari, Raval and Gawariya families built fence along the boundaries of the allotted plots but that too were removed by the groups opposing their settlement. 

The allotment letter is awaiting the signature of the Sarpanch, without which the families cannot apply for housing aid from the government. 

We fail to understand such resistance of of one community against another. 70 years since independence and the large sections of nomadic communities still can’t live and experience the freedom that was achieved. Our experience of working with these communities all these years has made us believe that these sections are willingly kept deprived of their fundamental rights. 

A rather tired Bhamrabhai  expresses  his woes.. “it is extremely frustrating and tiring, everywhere we go we face the same challenges and resistance. A dharna in Gandhinagar is the only way to make ourselves heard!!!” 

We are trying your best to ensure that these families attain their rights. We are preparing to take this matter to court while on the other-side we feel taking the matters to court isn’t the solution. There are 60 lakh people awaiting a better life and taking all these matters to court is not the solution to the issues!!

In a country that possesses a rich tradition of charity and welfare, witnessing such hatred for fellow humans is difficult to comprehend. Our society has tradition of building animal shelters, old age homes etc. etc and we can’t help such extremely poor families!!

Hope good-sense prevails and these families soon get the homes they deserve……

‘આ લોકો અમારા ગામના નથી અમારા ગામની સહમતી આ લોકોને પ્લોટ આપવાની નથી છતાં તમે પ્લોટ ફાળવશો તો માથાકુટ થઈ જશે.’

‘પણ વર્ષોથી તમારા ગામમાં રહે છે અને કોઈ સ્વીકારશે નહીં તો એ લોક ક્યાં જશે?’

‘એ અમારે નથી જોવાનું પણ અમે એમને અમારા ગામમાં કાયમ ઘુસવા નહીં દઈએ.’

બનાસકાંઠાના દિયોદર તાલુકાના રાંટિલાગામમાં રહેતા ભરથરી, ગવારિયા અને રાવળ સમુદાયને પ્લોટ ફાળવણી માટે ગામના રાજકીય આગેવાનોનો આવો વિરોધ. 14 પરિવારો આવડા મોટા ગામમાં કામય રહી જાય તોયે ગામને કાંઈ વાંધો આવે એમ નથી છતાં ગામના માથાભારે અને પૈસાવાળા લોકોની આવી ગરીબ માનસીકતા સમજાતી નથી.

મુખ્યમંત્રી થી લઈને કલેકટર, જિલ્લા વિકાસ અધિકારીને ઢગલાબંધ પત્રો લખ્યા. બી.પી.એલ.યાદીમાં આ પરિવારોના નામ છે લક્ષાંક પુરો કરવા કાગળ પર પ્લોટ ફાળવ્યા પણ કબજો આપતા નથી. ખુબ લખ્યા પછી આખરે ગત અઠવાડિયે સર્કલ ઓફીસર અન્ય અધિકારી સાથે જમીનની માપણી કરી આપવા રાંટીલા ગયા. ખુબ માથાકુટ થઈ. સર્કલ અધિકારી ગઢવી સાહેબે કહ્યું, આ ગરીબોને માથે ઘર અપાવવામાં આપણે પહેલ કરવી જોઈએ એની જગ્યાએ વિરોધ યોગ્ય નથી પણ એમનું સાંભળે કોણ. જીવનું જોખમ હતું. માથાભારે લોકો માપણીનો વિરોધ કરતા હતા છતાં સર્કલ અધિકારીએ માપણી કરી. પણ પ્લોટ ફાળવણીના હુકમ પર સહી કરવાની સરપંચે ના પાડી. રાજકીય રીતે દબાણ થઈ રહ્યું છે.

પ્લોટની માપણી ઉપર ભરથરી, રાવળ અને ગવારિયા પરિવારોએ વાડ કરી તો તા.5 જુનના રોજ ગામના એક જુથે આવીને આ વાડ કાઢી નાખી.

પ્લોટ મળ્યાના હુકમ પર સરપંચની સહી થવી જોઈએ પણ તે થતી નથી એટલે આ પરિવારો મકાન સહાય માટે પણ અરજી કરી શકતા નથી. આ પરિવારોના વસવાટ સામે આટલી હદે વિરોધ કેવી રીતે ચાલે. આઝાદીને આટલા વર્ષો થયા છતાં વિચરતી જાતિના લોકો આ દેશના નાગરિક તરીકેના પ્રાથમિક અધિકારોથી વંચિત છે અલબત તેમને વંચિત રાખવામાં આવ્યા છે કે આવે છે. વસાહતના આગેવાન ભમરાભાઈ કહે છે, ‘હવે તો કંટાળ્યા છીએ. દરેક ગામમાં આવા પ્રશ્નો છે. હવે તો ગાંધીનગર જઈને બેસી જઈને એમ થાય છે.’ કોઈની ધીરજની આટલી પરિક્ષા લેવી ઉચીત નથી. આ પરિવારોને તેમનો હક મળે તે માટે VSSM પણ છેવટ સધી પ્રયત્ન કરશે. હાલ તો કોર્ટમાં જવાની તૈયારી કરી લીધી છે.પણ પ્રશ્ન એ થાય છે કે, 60 લાખ લોકોની દરેક વસાહતો માટે કોર્ટમાં જવું એ પણ ઉકેલ નથી. માણસને માણસ માટે પ્રેમ થાય એ જરૃરી છે. ગાયો માટે પાંજરાપોળ કરીએ તો આવા માણસો માટે ઘર કેમ નહીં?

કોઈ વ્યક્તિ માટે કડક વલણ અપનાવવું ના પડે એ માટે ઈશ્વર સૌને સદબુદ્ધી આપે એવી પ્રાર્થના.

પ્લોટની માપણી કરી રહેલા અધિકારીઓ ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે. માપણીનું આટલું કામ થઈ ગયું પણ કબજો મળતો નથી. આ પરિવારો જે સ્થિતિમાં રહે છે તે પણ ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.
