“We have now learnt to live like other people. Previously we had no sense of even taking bath or anything! We used to move our hut here to there and stayed on. I and my husband used to sell balloons and Cotton-Candy. It was a kind of irregular life-style until we met Maheshbhai but after meeting him, our life changed.”

During 2009, when we met Rekhabahen Devipujak, she was not having Voter card, Ration Card or any other document that may be helpful to recognize as the citizen of India. Maheshbhai made her understand that life cannot be lead only on the balloons and candy selling. You can start a new business like selling vegetables to fulfill your financial needs. Rekhaben showed enthusiasm and she thought to take chances with the new business. ‘Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch’ helped her by donating a vegetable hand cart costing Rs. 5500. She was worried that if the business may not be well but then slowly and gradually it was streamlined. Her courage to work was boosted with it and she also got in to making hearth out of asbestos sheets. She also did seasonal farming on a partnership basis and earned 37,000 profit in it. Rekhaben’s hard work brought her to enough financial stability to dream for her own house.

She asked for Rs. 10,000 loan and VSSM helped her by providing interest free loan to buy her dream home. She bought house under government scheme. Nearly after the 8 years of struggle, Rekhaben has now her own house and financial stability. 

This help made her sensitive towards her handicapped brother in law’s family which earlier she could not even think because of her own struggle to earn enough to lead her own life well. She now feels so confident that she is able to earn well and may take additional responsibility to help other family members. This is how the sense of helping others has extended in her life. 

VSSM has this strength to help the enthusiastic Rekhaben who struggle to lead life just because of the lack of easy financial help. Our donor’s help becomes the backbone of someone’s life in various people’s life.

Homes for nomadic families in Deesa….

Recently, the Municipal Corporation of Deesa town pledged to allot 300 square feet houses to 50 homeless families scattered around the town, living in shanties and hutments. The catch however, was each family needed to deposit Rs. 60,000. Now the issue here was that these families never have so much money and from where to get that kind of amount to pre-book the houses. The president of the municipal corporation is the very  compassionate Shri Pravinbhai Mali, who tried to secure Rs. 45,000 from the Department of Social Welfare for each of these families. The families felt each of them would be able to mobilize Rs. 5,000 but requested VSSM for a loan of Rs. 10,000 each.

“We will pay off the loan as early as we can manage to, but please give us loan, we do not want to miss this opportunity. We do not want to spend anymore monsoons in these shanties, in such appalling living conditions!!” was the collective appeal.

We had a meeting with these families applying for the houses, by then each of the appicant had visited the site atleast thrice!! “Ben, please ensure we get the house soon.” During the entire time we were in the meeting they kept on repeating the same thing, need for a loan and to move into a pucca house as early as possible. We have decided to give them the loans but the problem we are starring at is limited financial resources as compared to the increased number of applicants!!

Suddenly the nomadic families of Deesa town have witnessed a silver lining amidst  their  nightmarish existence. The efforts of Deesa Municipal Corporation, Shri. Pravinbhai Mali, the well-wishers of VSSM, our team member Mahesh have all been instrumental in enabling these families think of realizing their dream. We will remain grateful to each of you for the support and to the members of nomadic communities who have helped us realize our purpose in life.

પોતાના ઘરનો હરખ કોને ના હોય. સદીઓથી લબાચા લઈને રઝળ્યા કરનારાની ઘરની ઝંખના પુરી થવામાં હોય અથવા તે પુરી કરવામાં નિમિત્ત બનવાનું થાય તે પણ મોટા સુખ જેવું. ડીસામાં જુદી જુદી જગ્યાએ છાપરાં કરીને રહેનારા 50 ઘરવિહોણા પરિવારોને 300 સ્કે. ફૂટનું ઘર આપવાનો સંકલ્પ ડીસા નગરપાલિકાએ સેવ્યો. 

પરિવારો ગરીબ. નગરપાલિકામાં ઘર મેળવવા રુ. 60,000 ભરવાના. આટલી મૂડી પાસે હોત તો જોઈતું તુ શું? નગરપાલિકાના પ્રમુખ એવા ખુબ લાગણીશીલ પ્રવિણભાઈએ સમાજ કલ્યાણમાંથી રુ.45,000ની સહાય અપાવવાનું કર્યું. હજુ ખુટતા 15,000માંથી 10,000ની લોન લેવા સંસ્થામાં 50 પરિવારોએ અરજી કરી. ‘5000 ભેગા થઈ જાશે. પણ 10ની તમે લોન આપો.’

લોનના હપ્તા સગવડ પ્રમાણે ભરતા જઈશું પણ આ ચોમાસું હવે છાપરાંમાં નથી કાઢવું. તેવી તેમની લાગણી.

ડીસામાં જે ઘરો તેમને મળવાના છે ત્યાં તેમની સાથે બેઠક કરી. લગભગ દરેક વ્યક્તિ ચાર ચાર વાર ઘર જોઈ આવ્યા. ‘બેન અમને ઝટ ઘર મળે એમ કરજો હો...’ એવી તેમની સાથેની પ્રાથમિક બેઠક પૂર્ણ કરીને નીકળી ત્યાં સુધીની આજીજી... અમે એમને લોન આપીશું. પણ હવે લોન લેનાર પરિવારોની સંખ્યા વધી છે અને અમારી પાસે ભંડોળ મર્યાદીત છે...

નગરપાલિકા ડીસા, પ્રવિણભાઈ માળી અને વી.એસ.એસ.એમ. જેમના થકી આ કામ કરી શકે છે તેવા આપ સૌ પ્રિય સ્વજનો, આ પરિવારો માટે દિવસ રાત દોડતો અમારો કાર્યકર મહેશ. આમ તો આ બધાના કારણે જ આ પરિવારોની આંખમાં સોનેરી સ્વપ્ન આંજવાનું શક્ય બન્યું, જો કે સૌથી વધુ અગત્યનું જેમના થકી આ કામ કરવાનું થઈ શક્યું તેવા વિચરતી – વિમુક્ત જાતિના પરિવારજનો,સૌનો આભાર..

The 8 Vansfoda families living in Jesda village have finally embarked upon the process of building their homes. The families have received the first instalment of Rs. 17,500 from the government while the loan of Rs. 15,000 from  Kalupur Cooperative Bank and VSSM’s support of Rs. 25,000 in form of construction material and their own savings are helping these families build a home of their dreams.

  

It is first ever house of  these families are building intact no one from their previous generations have ever lived in a pucca house so yet these homes are their lifelong yearning and dreams and they are taking utmost care to build it in a way that will last for their future generations. So instead of one room they have decided to make it a two room house. Changes in the design means added cost that they will be bearing and they are ready to shell that cost from their savings they manage from whatever little they earn!! 

The approach and patience these families have adopted surely reminds us of the popular song, “Ek Bangla Bane Nyara…”  ( to make a  beautiful and distinct house )

‘એક બંગલા બને ન્યારા’

કવિ સુંદરમનું મુક્ત છે, 

‘તને મે ઝંખી છે, 

યુગોથી ધીખેલા

પ્રખર સહરાની તરસથી’ આ મુક્તક જેવી જ તલપ વિચરતા પરિવારોને ઘરની છે.

પાટણના શંખેશ્વર તાલુકાના જેસડાગામમાં 8 વાંસફોડા પરિવારોના ઘરો બંધાઈ રહ્યા છે. સરકાર દ્વારા રૃા.17,500નો પહેલો હપ્તો ઘર બાંધકામ માટે મળ્યો છે. પણ કાલપુર બેંકમાંથી રૃા.15,000ની લોન, VSSMમાંથી ઘર બાંધકામ માટે ખરીદીને આપવામાં આવેલું રૃા.25,000નું મટીરીયલ અને પોતાની મહેનતની કમાણીમાંથી નાની બચત કરીને તેમણે ખુબ સરસ ઘર બનાવવાની દિશામાં પગરણ માંડ્યા છે.

જ્યાં એક રૃમ બનાવવાનો છે ત્યાં તેમણે બે રૃમ અને તે પણ વ્યવસ્થિત બનાવવાનું વિચાર્યું તો, પહેલાં અમને ચિંતા થયેલી કે આવડુ મોટું બાંધકામ તેઓ કેવી રીતે પુરુ કરશે પણ તેઓ ખુબ સારી રીતે ધીમે ધીમે પણ નક્કર કામ કરી રહ્યા છે. 

એ લોકો કહે છે, ‘અમારી આખી પેઢીમાં અમે પહેલાં છીએ જે આ રીતે પોતાના અને એ પણ પાકા ઘરમાં રહેવા જવાના છીએ. એટલે ભલે મોડું થાય પણ સરસ ઘર બનાવીને પછી એમાં જઈશું. અમારી પાસે મુડી નથી પણ ધીમે ધીમે મૂડી ભેગી કરી ઘર બાંધીશું.’

હિન્દી ફીલ્મનું ગીત ‘એક બંગલા બને ન્યારા’ યાદ આવી ગયું. 

ફોટોમાં સરકાર, vssm અને પોતાની મહેનતથી બનાવી રહેલા ઘરો સાથે વાંસફોડા પરિવારો. હાલમાં તેઓ જે સ્થિતિમાં રહે છે તે અને આવનારા દિવસોમાં તેઓ જેમાં રહેવા જવાના છે તે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.

Keshuben's before living condition...

Keshuben Dideda belongs to Vadia and has been married to Amrabhai Saraniya for last

15 years. Amrabhai is an alcoholic and shared no financial burden hence the sole it became Keshuben’s sole responsibility to run the household. Keshuben took up petty menial jobs to earn living. The family survived in  a shanty that would fall apart every monsoon. After each monsoon Keshuben was required to spend her hard earned money on refurbishing the roof of her shanty. One day Keshuben narrated her plight to VSSM’s Shardaben who requested VSSM  for  extending support of Rs. 25,000 to Keshuben.

Keshuben suggested that instead of giving the money to her they be paid directly to the vendor from whom the building material was to be sourced as she feared that her alcoholic husband would  take away that money and waste it on his drinking. Hence VSSM followed her instructions and made payments to the vendor suppling the construction material and Keshuben bared the cost of labour and masons. Keshuben who until now had always lived in a shanty moved to stay in a proper pucca house of her own.

One day Amrabhai asked her, “VSSM has made this house for you, what do you want from me??

Keshuben was very quick to reply, “ Give up alcohol, that is all I want from you.” True to his word Amrabhai has given up his habit of drinking. The couple now work as labourers and share the responsibility of running the household. 

“ It is 15 years after marriage that we are experiencing  the bliss of being married!!” shared Keshuben to VSSM’s team member.

સરાણિયા કેશુબેનનું VSSMના માધ્યમથી નવું ઘર બન્યું.

બનાસકાંઠાના વાડિયાના દીકરી કેશુબેનના દીદેડા ગામમાં રહેતા અમરાભાઈ સરાણિયા સાથે પંદર વર્ષ પહેલા લગ્ન થયા. બંને પતિ પત્ની છાપરામાં રહેતા હતા. પતિ દારુ પીવે, કમાય નહિ, ઘર ચલાવવાની જવાબદારી કેશુબેનના માથે. છાણવાસિંદા કરી પોતાનું ગુજરાન ચલાવે. ચોમાસું આવે એટલે છાપરું તૂટી જાય અને નવું છાપરું બનાવામાં જે થોડી ઘણી બચત કરી હોય એ ખર્ચાઈ જાય. કેશુબેને પોતાના બધા જ દુખની વાત VSSMના કાર્યકર્તા શારદાબેનને કરી એટલે VSSMની ટીમએ પચીસ હજાર રૂપિયાની સહાય આપવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. કેશુબેને કહ્યું કે “ઘરે પૈસા આપશો તો ઘરવાળો લઇ લેશે બહેન” એટલે પૈસા સીધા દુકાનદારને આપ્યા અને પતરાં, ઇંટો, રેતી, સિમેન્ટ, પાઈપો એ બધો સામાન સીધો કેશુબેનને ત્યાં પહોંચ્યો. ઘર બાંધકામમાં પોતે અને કડિયાને મહેનત કરીને પોતે પૈસા આપ્યા આમ મજુરી કરી ઘર ઉભું કર્યું. કેશુબેન પોતે હમેશા છાપરામાં જ રહ્યા હતા.

હવે, પોતાની કહી શકાય એવી છત માથે છે. એમના પતિ અમરાભાઈ એ કેશુબેનને કહ્યું કે “બહેનએ તો ઘર બનાવી આપ્યું તો હવે હું તને શું આપું?” કેશુબેનએ કહ્યું કે “દારુ છોડી દો બસ..” અને અમરાભાઈ એ એજ ઘડીએ દારુ છોડ્યો. હવે બેય પતિ પત્ની સાથે મજુરી કરે છે અને કહે છે કે “પંદર વર્ષ ના લગ્ન જીવન પછી પહેલી વાર સાથે ખુશ છીએ”. 

VSSMના માધ્યમથી અને સૌ સ્વજનોની મદદથી કેશુબહેન જેવા ઘણા પરિવારોને મદદરૂપ થઇ શક્યા જે માટે અમે સૌના આભારી છીએ.

“Be warned of unpleasant  consequences if you plan to settle these families in our village. They aren't from this village and we do not want them to stay here forever….”

“But these families have been here for years, where will they go if no-one will accept them?”

“That is not our concern, we will not allow to their permanent settlement in our village!!”

This  conversation was between the team of VSSM and the village leaders of Rantila village in Banaskantha’s Diyodar block. The village elders and leaders are opposing allotment of plots to 14 families belonging to the nomadic Bharthari, Gavariya and Raval communities. The village has ample space and yet the rich and the influential villagers are finding it difficult to spare some space for the poor…There are times we feel all is well and suddenly we have instances like the particular one and we begin to question such poor mindsets of the rich and powerful….

Right from  the Chief Minister, District Collector, District Development Officer etc., VSSM has made  numerous appeals to all the concerned authorities on this issue.  The authorities aren’t prepared to consider giving them land on paper so as to meet their targets of allotting plots to families living under BPL..After countless requests and appeals the Circle Officer accompanied by his team of officials arrived at Ratila village  to measure the plots. Their arrival tensed up the situation so much that was threat to life….. The Circle Officer, Shri.Gadhvi Saheb is a compassionate officer. 

“These are extremely poor families. One should voluntarily come forward to give some place to them and help them build homes, instead of choosing to oppose such initiatives,” explained Shri. Gadhvi Saheb. But no one was ready to listen to his appeal. Nonetheless, Shri Gadhvi continued to finish the job he had come for. He measured the plots but the Sarpanch refused to sign the Land Allotment Order letter. There were political pressures as-well!!!

On 5th June,  these  Bharthari, Raval and Gawariya families built fence along the boundaries of the allotted plots but that too were removed by the groups opposing their settlement. 

The allotment letter is awaiting the signature of the Sarpanch, without which the families cannot apply for housing aid from the government. 

We fail to understand such resistance of of one community against another. 70 years since independence and the large sections of nomadic communities still can’t live and experience the freedom that was achieved. Our experience of working with these communities all these years has made us believe that these sections are willingly kept deprived of their fundamental rights. 

A rather tired Bhamrabhai  expresses  his woes.. “it is extremely frustrating and tiring, everywhere we go we face the same challenges and resistance. A dharna in Gandhinagar is the only way to make ourselves heard!!!” 

We are trying your best to ensure that these families attain their rights. We are preparing to take this matter to court while on the other-side we feel taking the matters to court isn’t the solution. There are 60 lakh people awaiting a better life and taking all these matters to court is not the solution to the issues!!

In a country that possesses a rich tradition of charity and welfare, witnessing such hatred for fellow humans is difficult to comprehend. Our society has tradition of building animal shelters, old age homes etc. etc and we can’t help such extremely poor families!!

Hope good-sense prevails and these families soon get the homes they deserve……

‘આ લોકો અમારા ગામના નથી અમારા ગામની સહમતી આ લોકોને પ્લોટ આપવાની નથી છતાં તમે પ્લોટ ફાળવશો તો માથાકુટ થઈ જશે.’

‘પણ વર્ષોથી તમારા ગામમાં રહે છે અને કોઈ સ્વીકારશે નહીં તો એ લોક ક્યાં જશે?’

‘એ અમારે નથી જોવાનું પણ અમે એમને અમારા ગામમાં કાયમ ઘુસવા નહીં દઈએ.’

બનાસકાંઠાના દિયોદર તાલુકાના રાંટિલાગામમાં રહેતા ભરથરી, ગવારિયા અને રાવળ સમુદાયને પ્લોટ ફાળવણી માટે ગામના રાજકીય આગેવાનોનો આવો વિરોધ. 14 પરિવારો આવડા મોટા ગામમાં કામય રહી જાય તોયે ગામને કાંઈ વાંધો આવે એમ નથી છતાં ગામના માથાભારે અને પૈસાવાળા લોકોની આવી ગરીબ માનસીકતા સમજાતી નથી.

મુખ્યમંત્રી થી લઈને કલેકટર, જિલ્લા વિકાસ અધિકારીને ઢગલાબંધ પત્રો લખ્યા. બી.પી.એલ.યાદીમાં આ પરિવારોના નામ છે લક્ષાંક પુરો કરવા કાગળ પર પ્લોટ ફાળવ્યા પણ કબજો આપતા નથી. ખુબ લખ્યા પછી આખરે ગત અઠવાડિયે સર્કલ ઓફીસર અન્ય અધિકારી સાથે જમીનની માપણી કરી આપવા રાંટીલા ગયા. ખુબ માથાકુટ થઈ. સર્કલ અધિકારી ગઢવી સાહેબે કહ્યું, આ ગરીબોને માથે ઘર અપાવવામાં આપણે પહેલ કરવી જોઈએ એની જગ્યાએ વિરોધ યોગ્ય નથી પણ એમનું સાંભળે કોણ. જીવનું જોખમ હતું. માથાભારે લોકો માપણીનો વિરોધ કરતા હતા છતાં સર્કલ અધિકારીએ માપણી કરી. પણ પ્લોટ ફાળવણીના હુકમ પર સહી કરવાની સરપંચે ના પાડી. રાજકીય રીતે દબાણ થઈ રહ્યું છે.

પ્લોટની માપણી ઉપર ભરથરી, રાવળ અને ગવારિયા પરિવારોએ વાડ કરી તો તા.5 જુનના રોજ ગામના એક જુથે આવીને આ વાડ કાઢી નાખી.

પ્લોટ મળ્યાના હુકમ પર સરપંચની સહી થવી જોઈએ પણ તે થતી નથી એટલે આ પરિવારો મકાન સહાય માટે પણ અરજી કરી શકતા નથી. આ પરિવારોના વસવાટ સામે આટલી હદે વિરોધ કેવી રીતે ચાલે. આઝાદીને આટલા વર્ષો થયા છતાં વિચરતી જાતિના લોકો આ દેશના નાગરિક તરીકેના પ્રાથમિક અધિકારોથી વંચિત છે અલબત તેમને વંચિત રાખવામાં આવ્યા છે કે આવે છે. વસાહતના આગેવાન ભમરાભાઈ કહે છે, ‘હવે તો કંટાળ્યા છીએ. દરેક ગામમાં આવા પ્રશ્નો છે. હવે તો ગાંધીનગર જઈને બેસી જઈને એમ થાય છે.’ કોઈની ધીરજની આટલી પરિક્ષા લેવી ઉચીત નથી. આ પરિવારોને તેમનો હક મળે તે માટે VSSM પણ છેવટ સધી પ્રયત્ન કરશે. હાલ તો કોર્ટમાં જવાની તૈયારી કરી લીધી છે.પણ પ્રશ્ન એ થાય છે કે, 60 લાખ લોકોની દરેક વસાહતો માટે કોર્ટમાં જવું એ પણ ઉકેલ નથી. માણસને માણસ માટે પ્રેમ થાય એ જરૃરી છે. ગાયો માટે પાંજરાપોળ કરીએ તો આવા માણસો માટે ઘર કેમ નહીં?

કોઈ વ્યક્તિ માટે કડક વલણ અપનાવવું ના પડે એ માટે ઈશ્વર સૌને સદબુદ્ધી આપે એવી પ્રાર્થના.

પ્લોટની માપણી કરી રહેલા અધિકારીઓ ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે. માપણીનું આટલું કામ થઈ ગયું પણ કબજો મળતો નથી. આ પરિવારો જે સ્થિતિમાં રહે છે તે પણ ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.

The efforts of VSSM resulted into allotment of residential plots to 155 Vadee ( Snake charmer) families in Surendranagar’s Dhangadhra town, the construction on the plots commenced with the support of VSSM and government. Currently construction is under progress for 115 houses each adjoined with a sanitation block. However, construction has reached a roadblock for 30 families whose allotted plots lie too close to the passing railway  line. The railway authorities have stalled the construction while  plots of 8 families are situated on the low laying areas facing fear flooding during monsoons. So their works have also come to a halt. 

We have presented the cases of these 38 families to the concerned authorities and are awaiting their response. It has to be seen whether it takes years or weeks for the officials to find a resolution to these pending  issues.

vssm અને સરકારની મદદથી બંધાઈ રહેલાં ૧૫૩ વાદી પરિવારોના ઘરોમાંથી ૩૮ ઘરોનું કામ ઘોંચમાં પડ્યું

સુરેન્દ્રનગર જીલ્લાના ધ્રાંગધ્રામાં વાદી સમુદાયના ૧૫૫ પરિવારોને સરકાર દ્વારા રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફાળવાયા છે. આ પરિવારોના ઘરના બાંધકામમાં vssm સાથે સંકળાયેલા સૌ સ્નેહીજનોના કારણે નિમિત્ત બનવાનું થયું છે. સરકાર પણ પ્રત્યેક પરિવારને રૂ.૪૫,૦૦૦ આપી છે. 

આમ થોડી સરકારી આંટીઘૂંટીની વચમાં હાલમાં ૧૧૫ ઘર અને સેનિટેશન યુનિટનું બાંધકામ ચાલી રહ્યું છે. જયારે ૩૦ પરિવારોના પ્લોટની બાજુમાંથી રેલ્વે લાઈન જતી હોવાના કારણે રેલ્વે વિભાગ દ્વારા મકાન બાંધકામની ના પાડી છે જયારે ૮ મકાનો ખાડામાં છે. એટલે એમના કામો થયા નથી. 

આ ૩૮ પરિવારોના ઘરો પણ બને એ માટે અમે સરકારમાં રજૂઆતો કરી છે જોઈએ હવે આ પ્રશ્ન પંચવર્ષીય યોજનાની જેમ ઉકેલાય છે કે લાગણી રાખી તત્કાલ ઉકેલાય છે!

હાલમાં બંધાઈ રહેલાં ઘરો અને સેનિટેશન યુનિટ ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.

143 nomadic families of Juna Deesa in Banaskantha have been allotted residential plots. 132 of these families have began construction of their house with  an adjoining sanitation unit. While the families are supported by VSSM and the Government in this effort, they are also pitching in their own savings to meet the balance fund requirement to build a house of their dreams….

We are supporting their efforts to complete this ‘Swapna Nagri’ as soon as possible, VSSM’s Ishawarbhai is also trying hard to ensure that the basic amenities from the government like power, water etc. reach the settlement on time. 

As can be seen in teh picture the families right now are busy finishing the roofs of the houses….

બનાસકાંઠાના જુના ડીસામાં વિચરતી જાતિના ૧૪૩ પરિવારોને સરકાર દ્વારા રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફાળવાયા છે. જેમાંથી ૧૩૨ પરિવારોના ઘર અને સાથે સેનિટેશન યુનિટ બાંધવાનું ચાલુ છે. સરકારની અને vssmની મદદ સાથે સાથે પોતાની કમાણીમાંથી બચત કરીને પોતાનું સ્વપ્નનું ઘર આ પરિવારો બનાવી રહ્યાં છે.

બસ આ સ્વપ્ન નગરી ઝટ પૂરી થાય એવી કોશિશ છે. vssmના કાર્યકર ઈશ્વરભાઈ પૂરી મહેનતથી આ પરિવારોના સરકારી લેવલ પરના લાઈટ, પાણી વગેરે જેવા કામ પૂરા થાય એ માટે કોશિશ કરે છે. 

હાલમાં બંધાઈ રહેલાં ઘરો ઢાંકવાનું કામ ચાલુ છે જે જોઈ શકાય છે.

The persistent efforts by VSSM’s Mohanbhai Bajaniyaa accompanied by the compassionate attitude of government officer  Shri. Narendra Jani, Additional Director of  Department for Nomadic Tribes, Patan helped the Vansfoda families from Jesda village of Patan’s Sami block receive residential plots for construction of houses. 

The families have recently began the construction of their homes without waiting for the government assistance to come through,  they have for the time being  received loan from the Kalupur Commercial Bank for the same.  With their handwork and support from the government and institution like the Kalupur Bank these families  will soon be realising their dream of a home….

પાટણ જીલ્લાના સમીતાલુકાના જેસડા ગામમાં રહેતા વાંસફોડા પરિવારોને સરકાર દ્વારા રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફાળવાયા. આ પ્લોટ પર ઘર બાંધવા માટે તેમને મકાન સહાય મળે એ માટે vssmના કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈ બજાણિયા કેટલાંય સમયથી પ્રયત્નશીલ હતા. એમના આ કામમાં શ્રી નરેન્દ્ર જાની નાયબ નિયામક વિચરતી જાતિ પાટણે ખુબ મદદ કરી. એમની મદદથી જ આ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ મળવાનું સંભવ બન્યું.

આ પરિવારોએ પણ મકાન સહાય મળે એ પહેલાં મકાનના પાયા ખોદવાનું. પાયા પુરવા માટે પથ્થર લાવવાનું શરુ કરી દીધું હતું અને એ માટે કાલુપુર બેંકમાંથી એમણે લોન પર લીધી છે. પોતાની મહેનત અને સરકારની મદદથી સુંદર ઘર બનાવવાનું આ પરિવારોએ સ્વપ્ન સેવ્યું છે.

vssm પણ આ પરિવારોને ઘર બાંધવામાં શક્ય મદદ કરશે.. બસ આ પરિવારો એમને ગમતી વહાલપની વસાહતમાં ઝટ પહોચે.

Vadia and its residents have always been an enigma for the society. For many decades the women of Vadia have practiced prostitution as a means to earn their living and fend their families. While the society held their prejudice and believed that it was a profession these women choose voluntarily, the fact was totally contradictory  to it. As a result of such mindset across sections of society no government agencies, voluntary organisations or individuals succeeded with their efforts in Vadia. 

In 2005-06, we  reached Vadia with an objective to make basic infrastrucutre facilities available to its residents. There was no pucca road connecting Vadia to the nearest village nor were the facilities of power, water, housing or sanitation available to them. When we brought these issues to the notice of the authorities they always argued “that there was no need to work in this village and with this community!!” Even the school never functioned as the teacher hardly showed up, as they considered  Vadia to be their punishment posting. Such preconceived behaviour hindered the community’s chances of accessing even the basic human rights….

As mentioned Vadia has been mysterious, more so because of the facade it wears,   the need of it is because of its extreme  vulnerability. To guard their vulnerability the community here maintains a very uptight appearance. They do not allow people to get close to them and neither they share their pain and sorrows with others. The initial years remained extremely challenging for us, we had to prove to this community that our presence in the village was to support them and not take advantage of their vulnerability. The stand VSSM took was to be a friend of these families instead of preaching them to shun away the profession they practiced. How can we even do that when we had no alternate livelihood available!! And why even bother of what others are doing or saying, we had the intention to remain patient, understanding and calm……..This preparedness helped us find a footing in a village where people never liked to visit again. The community members began approaching VSSM for their issues, shared their pain and joy with us, opened their hearts to us, made us part of their lives; basically they put faith in us.. They shared numerous stories with us, tales enough to write a novel…Our patience paid because we had no malice in mind our intent was to be helpful to them as much as possible…….

Our presence in the village and the never-say-die attitude helped us bridge the gap with the Vadia community. To an extent this also sensitised the authorities who mellowed a bit and changed their stance towards Vadia. A pucca road and decent pucca houses in the village became a reality, the water issue eased a bit. VSSM began a school in the village… and many more such encouraging outcomes were witnessed. The community needed sanitation units and  has been requesting for the same for quite some time now. The government aid only comes after the sanitation unit is built, a photo clicked and sent to the concerned department, who laters reimburses the amount spent on building the unit. It is impossible for the community here to save so much of cash on hand (around Rs. 12,000 to 15,000)  to construct a toilet block!! The other pre-condition to access government support was the unit had to be in the village whereas there are numerous families who stay in farms and could not access government aid. Hence, VSSM requested its well-wishers to contribute towards construction of sanitation units in Vadia. In the first stage we have decided to construct 60 units from the support we have received so far.

The Block Development Officer (BDO) has inspected the ongoing construction,as this point, we aren’t sure how many families will receive the government support but the community has agreed to give the amount they receive to the families staying in the farms who aren’t entitled to any such government support. Such gesture might seem normal but considering the image Vadia had, its pure magic!!! 

The math behind sanitation unit :

Government support APL families is Rs. 8000 whereas to the BPL families is 12,000. The cost of constructing one sanitation unit is Rs. 15,500. The remaining amount will be provided by VSSM, whereas VSSM will cover the complete cost for the families who aren’t entitled to government support. 

We are extremely grateful to all our supporters for responding to our call and extending generous support. 

We are also thankful to Shri Deepakbhai Chaudhry for taking charge of the construction of sanitations units in Vadia. It would have been challenging task for VSSM to ensure completion of the project considering the internal dynamics prevalent in Vadia.

વાડિયામાં સેનિટેશન યુનિટનું કામ શરુ થયું.

બનાસકાંઠાના વાડિયાગામમાં ૨૦૦૫-૦૬ ના વર્ષમાં વારંવાર જવાનું થયું. મૂળ તો આ ગામમાં તમામ પ્રાથમિક સુવિધાઓ ઉપબ્ધ થાય એ કરવું હતું. એ વખતે તો વડગામડાથી વાડિયાને જોડતો પાકો રોડ, પાણી, લાઈટ, ઘર જેવી કોઈ સુવિધા આ ગામના લોકોને મળી નહોતી. આ સંદર્ભે કચેરીમાં રજૂઆત માટે જવાનું થાય એટલે સૌને આ ગામમાં કોઈ કામ કરવાની જરૂર નથી એમ જ લાગતું. 

વાડીયામાં રહેતાં સરાણિયા પરિવારોની બહેનો દેહવ્યાપાર કરીને પરિવારનો ગુજારો કરતી જે સામાન્ય સમાજ માટે સરળતાથી સ્વીકારી શકાય એમ નહોતું, વાત ખરી, પણ અન્ય વિકલ્પ માટે કે એમને આવી દોઝખભરી જિંદગી કેમ અપનાવવી પડી એના મૂળમાં જઈ આ સમસ્યાને સમજવા કોઈ તૈયાર નહોતું. ગામમાં જવાનું કહેવામાં આવે એટલે સૌના નાકના ટેરવાં ચડી જાય. જે શિક્ષકની આ ગામમાં બદલી થાય એને સજા મળ્યા જેવું લાગે.

શરૂઆતના એ દિવસો ખુબ સંઘર્ષમય રહ્યાં. પણ ધીરજથી કામ કરવાનું હતું એ અમે જાણતા હતાં. વળી એક અભિગમ એ પણ હતો કે, કોઈ શું કરે છે? એની પળોજણમાં પડ્યા વગર આપણાથી શું થઇ શકે એ વિચારીએ અને એ દિશામાં કામ કરીએ તો વધારે સારું થઇ શકે. બસ આ અભિગમે ગામમાં ધીમે ધીમે બદલાવની શરૂઆત કરી. આ ગામના કેટલાય રહસ્યો જે કયારેય કોઈ જાણી ના શકે એ રહસ્યો સરણીયા પરિવારોએ સામેથી કહ્યા. આ બધું એમના પરિવારના સભ્ય કે સ્વજન બન્યા વગર સંભવ નહોતું. પણ ભાવ શુદ્ધ હતો એટલે ધીમે ધીમે લોકો ભરોષો મુકતા થયા અને મુક્ત મને પોતાની આપવીતી કહેતા થયા. એક નહિ પણ અનેક નવલકથા રચાય એવી આ ગામમાં રહેતાં દરેક પરિવારની વિટંબણા હતી.

સતત લાગ્યાં રહેવાનાં કારણે વહીવટીતંત્રનો અભિગમ પણ ધીમે ધીમે બદલાયો. રોડ અને પાકા ઘરો બન્યાં. પાણીની સમસ્યા પણ કંઇક અંશે હળવી થઈ. ગામમાં શૌચાલય બને એ માટે ગામલોકો ઘણા સમયથી રજૂઆત કરતાં હતાં. પણ ગામડાંમાં શૌચાલય માટે સરકારી સહાય શૌચાલય બનાવ્યા પછી એનો ફોટો પાડી કચેરીમાં આપ્યાં પછી મળે એમ અધિકારી વારંવાર કહે. જયારે બીજી બાજુ વાડિયામાં રહેતાં એવાં કેટલાંય પરિવારો પાસે રૂ.૧૨,૦૦૦ થી રૂ.૧૫૦૦૦ની એવી કોઈ જમા પુંજી નહોતી કે જેમાંથી એ સેનિટેશન યુનિટ બનાવી શકે. વળી ગામમાં જેમની પાસે સનદ હતી એમને સેનિટેશન યુનિટ બન્યા પછી સરકારી સહાય મળે પણ ખરા પણ જેમના ઘરો ખેતરમાં હતાં એમને આ સહાય મળવાનું સંભવ નહોતું.  

આખરે vssmએ વિચરતી જાતિના કામોમાં મદદરૂપ થતાં સૌ સ્વજનો સામે અપીલ મૂકી અને આ નિમિતના પૈસા મળ્યાં. અમે ૬૦ પરિવારના સેનિટેશન યુનિટ પ્રથમ બનાવવાનું નક્કી કર્યું અને એનું કામ શરુ થયું. 

તાલુકા વિકાસ અધિકારીને ગામમાં સેનિટેશન યુનીટનું બાંધકામ શરુ થયાનો ખ્યાલ આવ્યો એટલે એ આવીને બાંધકામ જોઈ ગયાં. એ કેટલાં પરિવારોને સહાયની રકમ આપે છે એનો ખ્યાલ નથી પણ જેમને મળશે એ તમામ પરિવારો એ રકમ જેમને સરકારી ગ્રાન્ટ ખેતરમાં ઘર હોવાના કારણે નહિ મળી શકે એમને આપવાનો નિર્ધાર કર્યો છે. આમ તો આવો વિચાર પણ આ ગામના ભૂતકાળના અનુભવો યાદ કરું તો આશ્ચર્ય થાય એમ છે. પણ ચમત્કાર થાય છે એ અમે માનીએ છીએ અને અમને એ વડિયામાં

દેખાય છે.

સરકાર BPL લાભાર્થીને રૂ.૧૨૦૦૦ અને APL પરિવારોને રૂ.૮,૦૦૦ મદદ કરે છે જયારે એક સેનિટેશન યુનિટની કોસ્ટ રૂ. ૧૫,૫૦૦ જેટલી થાય આમ બાકીની રકમ vssmમાંથી આપવામાં આવશે. અને જેમને સરકારી સહાય નહિ મળે એમનો તો તમામ ખર્ચ vssm આપશે. આ કામ vssm સાથે સંકળાયેલા સૌ દાતાઓની મદદથી સંભવિત બન્યું જે માટે અમે સૌના આભારી છીએ.

સેનિટેશન યુનિટનું બાંધકામ વાડિયામાં કરવાનું હોઈ લોકલ માણસોનું કામ માટે મળવાનું થોડું મુશ્કેલ બનત. વળી આ દિશામાં સંસ્થાગત રીતે અમારો કોઈ અનુભવ પણ નહિ ત્યારે આ ક્ષેત્રમાં ઘણું કામ કરતાં શ્રી દીપકભાઈ ચૌધરીએ આ સંદર્ભનો તમામ ભાર ઉપાડી લીધો જે માટે અમે સૌ એમનાં આભારી છીએ.
